Jen Edwards Smith Receives Award From NMD Council Chair

Jen Edwards Smith, one of the recipients at the NMD Chairperson’s Annual Recognition Awards

Jen Edwards Smith, Secretary of Saintfield Development Association, has been presented with an award by the Chair of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Charlie Casey.
Jen was recognised for starting, along with Sarah Walker, the Saintfield Baby Cafe which provides a weekly “drop in, cafe-style” baby group at Saintfield Community Centre.  This is a vital service for parents addressing isolation and providing peer support within Saintfield’s wider rural community.  When accepting the award Jen said she and Sarah were very keen to get the Cafe up and running again as soon as possible.
Jen moved to Saintfield just a few years ago from England, where she had worked in community development.  In spite of having two young children she decided to get involved with the community in Saintfield. She came along to an open day and volunteered to help Saintfield Development Association. Within a short time she was elected as the secretary of SDA and has contributed as a member of the coordinating team ever since. Her role includes organising SDA meetings, taking meeting notes and circulating information to members, which she manages to fit in with looking after her two young sons.

Death Of Anne Walker

We are very sorry to have to announce the death of Anne Walker.
Anne has been a long term and active worker within SDA.
Her first involvement was with the “Town Committee” many years ago when the group had huge success with Saintfield In Bloom winning several awards and lifting the sense of pride and morale in the Village during difficult political times.
She rejoined some ten years ago as we evolved into SDA and was again a driving force in the “Greens” group. She did sterling work driving forward the Saintfield in Bloom projects as well as other landscape schemes round the Village.
She did not neglect the social side of the Greens committee and made sure that meetings were jolly and informal as well as productive.
Anne was a great supporter of Lawrence Murphy and the rest of the Green team, both new and old members, and strove to ensure that they got the recognition they deserve.
She is sorely missed.

Family History Search – Robinson Family Of Saintfield

Hi there,

Thanks to an earlier query I made great breakthroughs for my Smyths of Lisdoonan. Now I need some help for the other side of the Sloan family, the Kennedy side. I am currently working on the Kennedys from Knocknagoney, Holywood. I know that John Kennedy had 3 daughters and 3 sons. One of the daughters Sarah Kennedy married Dr Henry Simpson of 1st Presbyterian, Saintfield in 1803. Her sister as listed in their fathers will of 1814, Margaret Kennedy, married someone named Robinson, farm in Cursens (Thats what it looks like but could be Lessons). I would assume they married around 1790ish. Cheers and thanks for any help anyone can give.

Jo
