Hello from Ottawa, Canada!

There are so many holes in my father’s side of the family – I came across a story that there were some Maffetts in your area…is this true?

It’s an incredibly uncommon name here.

Regards,
Jody

    Hi Jody,

Thank you for contacting us! A quick Google revealed these websites, two among many. A townland just outside Saintfield is Leggygowan, but like Moffett/Maffett etc is has may spellings, such as Legagowan, Legagowen etc! Look at townlands.ie to see a map showing its location. (The website seems to be having a problem right now!)

Let’s hope you get a few replies!

Thank you for getting in contact.
Maffett, as you probably will know, is a variant of Moffat/Moffett. As spellings were inconsistent in centuries gone by they cannot be relied upon as accurate.
I am descended from Moffat’s from the townland of Barnamaghery, which lies three miles from Saintfield. David Moffett, a gentleman from the US, has done extensive research of a Moffett family from Leggygowan – please see the link http://www.discoversaintfield.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/SN20_web.pdf .

If I can help you please do not hesitate to contact me.
    Many Thanks,
    Peter

My great Grandfather James Moffett worked on a farm in Barnamaghery. He married in 1851 and brought his family up at Glasswater. His oldest son was called William who is my Grandfather. My fathers Uncle ran the first bus service from Downpatrick to Belfast in 1920.My family have a connection to Saintfield and a David Moffat lived there beside Rowallane.

My great grandfather was called James Moffett. He worked on a farm in Barnamaghery before marrying in 1851.He brought up his children on a farm called Glasswater. His oldest son was called William who is my grandfather.A brother of William ran the first bus service from Downpatrick to Belfast. The surname spelling was changed to Moffat by my Uncle David who was an accountant and lived beside Rowallane Saintfield. I also have information about a Great Aunt Margret who lived at Saintfield and attended the wedding of William and Ellen.I had an Aunt Florie Moffat who had a shop in Saintfield who was my father’s sister

James married in 1851 and brought his family up on a farm at Glasswater Creevycarnonan. His oldest son was called William who was my grandfather. I have strong links to Saintfield. William’s Aunt Margaret attended his wedding at Saintfield. She lived there. I had an Aunt Florie who owned a shop at Saintfield and an Uncle David who lived next to Rowallane Gardens. He changed the spelling to Moffat. He was an accountant. My father’s Uncle ran the first bus service from Downpatrick to Belfast in 1920
