are preparing a New Village Plan for Saintfield
(with the financial support of DDC and DRAP)

URS are the consultants appointed to prepare the plan and they are inviting all community groups, sports clubs, schools, churches, traders and residents to contribute their views and opinions.

The DRAFT VILLAGE PLAN is available to see in the shop below the Post Office at 1b Main Street from:

Thursday 10 May – Thursday 17 May inclusive, from 9:00am to 5:00pm AND
on Tuesday evening 15 May, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Ways to express your views:

Please come along to the shop and give your views on a short questionnaire OR
Speak to someone from URS or the Saintfield Town Committee, who will be in attendance OR
Download the Questionnaire and a copy of the Draft Village Plan:

While I am very encouraged by the ideas put forward by the draft plan, and very much support many of the proposals there is one key element which I think should be addressed.

As a relative newcomer to the area (I have lived in Saintfield for around 7 years), I cannot help but notice that Saintfield lacks a Village Hall type faciltity. For a settlement of this size it seems extraordinary that this is the case. I appreciate that such a large Capital expense would probably be well outwith the remit of Saintfield Town Regeneration Committee, but I do feel that it is something which could contribute to creating more of a “community”.
Granted there are Hall facilities attached to e.g. the Presbytarian and Church of Ireland Churches,not to mention the Orange Hall, and I am sure these are made available to the Public to some extent, but, by thier nature they are not Community facilities and are not always used by the wider community.
I must admit, at this point, to having an agenda of sorts. I am a Scout Leader at Saintfield Scout Group, which, as you will be aware, celebrated it’s 100th anniversary last year. The Scout Group does not have it’s own scout hall and has to rely on the hospitallity of the Church Hall in the Winter months, and the owner of the Demesne in the summer months. While these facilites are very welcome, a community Hall would be ideal for the use of groups such as the scouts and other youth groups. I am certain there would be significant demand for such a facility from a wide variety of other users.
Again I would emphasise that I fully undertsand that such a facility would be very expensive, not to mention the potentail difficulty in finding a suitable site, but I do think it would generate significant benefits for the community as a whole

I feel saintfield needs a new play park for the children, as the one that stands has nothing in it for my nephews aged 1 to 2 year olds if im wanting to take them to a park iv to travel to drumaness or carryduff as they enjoy these parks. Saintfield park is boring dull and unsafe for the children as it is full of broken glass. More houses are being built but there is nothing to do in the area.

I have lived in Saintfield for 22 years and my main priority would be to preserve the historic feel to the village. I believe in progress and change to improve the village, however I feel that sometimes this is carried out at the expense of tradition. In general Saintfield needs more spaces for children and young people, in my experience just creating parks can be a draw to young people who will have nothing to keep them amused therefore can result in antisocial behaviour. I think it would be better to create cycle/skate park areas, 3G pitch for football and places that children and young people can go with a purpose, rather than just open space. Regeneration of the shops (but keeping them traditional looking) would also be good for the village, I also think planted areas give people a sense of pride.

I agree with others on the thoughts of a childrens playground. I took my daughter (3 years old) to the park once and she nearly slipped off the top of the slide, as it is so high and has the side barriers I couldnt reach her to catch her. Luckily she got her balance and was ok! Also when she went on the swings the soft tar is so old and worn that it has turned very slippy and slimy causing her to slip over. After this I just go to the ormeau park so that she can also use her bike. Saintfield is a lovely place to live but a safe suitable childrens playground would be brilliant.
